WHY STUDENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS

We are already into the third decade of the twenty-first century but some practices need to be put to rest. With the talks of paradigm shifts to the twenty-first century skills in education there are those who are still pulling the flag down.

There are various other reasons to this other than just modernization that necessitate a walkout on some trends that most parents or guardians fancy. Due to decisions being imposed on them, students lose their potential of making a significant change in the world towards a vision.

When still very young kids have unlimited potential to do things that no one may have conceived to even a close inch. Such source of glitter should not be extinguished but kept glowing always. Guardians may be nurturing people that the world will look up to one day or a great personality that will be adored by millions or maybe just the most important person on the planet. Dreams and wishes should not be crushed with words bit rather be built on by support, we should let the beggars ride.

When little kids are offered guidance that is healthy practice but when the same guidance turns into a leash that pulls them to unwanted paths then that becomes a murder, the murder of a great talent. Over time as human beings we learn a lot through the various stages in life about what we like and what not. We figure out about the infinite fields the world has to offer and where we think we can best contribute. In such a scenario if we force a growing student to a specific path, it causes a lot of psychological impact.

Guardians may think that what they decide for their students is the best but it is not always like that. If for instance a student is interested in engineering but is forced to do journalism instead, such a student will lose interest in studies and his/her focus too. As a result, the student may end up being a failure in class without even giving it a thought.

At times it is not right to blame the student for their poor performance, instead we should try to know why. Quite a number of students are in school trying to live up to their parents’ expectations and if in such an occasion some of them even tend to commit suicide because they were unable to.

For someone who is allowed to follow their dream has a number of advantages, the greatest advantage is of self-push. Such a person does not give up very easily and has the willpower that is required to move ahead. Students who make their own choices generally have no one to blame when they are unable to live up to expectations of their parents. In most cases when they choose their path on their own they are highly unlikely to fail.

Some parents even choose the country where the student will study, their universities, and even their subjects. How is such a student supposed to study with a free mind? Imposing such decisions puts the students into depression and gives them a sense of regret.

The society always the blames the individual for a spoilt future but why not look at their parents and ask them why they made their son/daughter do that. Forcing has never resulted to peace. Pushing a student into something takes away their happiness not just for that short moment but that every other moment when the student will look back at it in the future and feel sorry for himself. Some may be able to cope with it but some just lead themselves into depression which in turn takes them to a path of destruction such as chronic abuse of drugs.

It is high time that this issue was addressed with the seriousness it deserves. We need to save our students when there is still time. The future of the world is in the hands of these growing students and we need to secure that future.
